West Branch Sacandaga River Gorge

I've heard rumors of tons of car-house sized boulders along the trail from West River Road out to the gorge itself. This section of the river is a popular hike due to the five waterfalls and numerous rapids, if anyone has any info on the area or wants to go explore sometime please do, and post it up here!

Also, several people have told me about bouldering on the Second Brother (not the big one) by Brant Lake.

Info?

As of 12/6 the road is closed. I was turned around in my little car about 3/4 miles from where i think the trail would be. This might have to wait to spring

The potential to find rock looks good. http://www.adirondackexperience.com/recreation/hiking/falls-on-the-west-branch-of-the-sacandaga-river-and-cold-brook-falls
I am assuming this web site has a pretty accurate starting point. Hopefully the original poster can give some more details.

I went today to check it out. Parked at the end of the road, did the river crossing, which was cold, and continued up into the gorge. After 2 miles or so there were no real climbable rocks. There are walls to the gorge, but nothing you could boulder. There wasn't much in the way of free standing stuff. Maybe father up there was good stuff, but we had to turn around due to daylight constraints.

On the way out we stopped on the side of the road and dropped into the gorge at an earlier point to find some smaller boulders scattered along the river bank. Again, nothing climbable. There could be more that we missed.

Any more info on this place? Were the boulders supposed to be up in the gorge or on between the road and the river before the trailhead?

Final verdict: no boulders before the end of the trail. Trail dies heading into the gorge, looks like a great spot, but nothing worth going to clean. We may not have gone far enough though... if someone wants to push onward, I recommend some waders or boots, thats stream crossing sucked barefoot.

Glad someone got out there, I was very unsure as to where they were, I had just been given a tip by a friend of mine and was intrigued by the topos. How did the cliffs look? Anything climbable at all?

Not that I saw. There were some broken cliff lines mostly. I will probably go back for a fly fishing session in the summer and get deeper in there so Ill post if I find anything. It is a pretty hike. I was optimistic heading in, but no boulders. Yes topo looks promising, but it is too steep really and the bulk of the rock was all in or on the river.
There were two nice looking boulders on the other side of the river at the start of West River Rd. Not sure if that is private, but they were pretty. May have good river washed features on them.

All that is state land, checked the GIS. Here's the quote that got me interested: "Huge boulders the size of small buildings and automobiles are strewn all about the base and side of the waterfall." I hope to go exploring there this summer as well.
